When I first opened this right after receiving I could definitely say there’s a difference.
I didnt keep track, one was more rough, one was sweeter…
Now, about a month later, even tho i didnt open it in between its harder to tell the difference…
The Yutaka midori is sweeter, with a mild type sencha tannin on the tongue
Used 6g in 4oz @160F x ~20 sec
yup

2nd steep @190F ~20sec

Fuka was rougher, with a harsh kind of on the tongue. Liquor yellowish

Yutaka kept the sweet tannin going. And stayed green. Glad i got more of this 🙂

ohmy… what else ! this like totally convinced me !!! oh wait a minute … wheres the “ALL NATURAL”  /// OMG \\\ !!!

contains less than 1% juice – now we’re talking… however it didnt say its organic juice concentrate ……… S-H-iiiiii-T

smell: mint

taste: mint green tea with some sugar(total 10g/bottle), not much tannin, however nothing that would remind me of “PU-ERH” …im not even going to polute my lonely puerh category with this. And definitely nothing appealing for me to buy this again.

Ghetto brew
Tastes ok. The sort of faded thing going, green tannin on tongue
slight floral, maybe some slight “honey” in the aroma/smell

Jas-etea.com (review)(product link) $12.55/3.5oz(100g), 3.5/oz = $56/lb.

Method: 3g/~3oz water @ 190F x 1 min or 2 min, then reinfused 2 min.

pic#4 here on right is color corrected at the liquor for liquor is pinkish, not yellow.

Taste: first infusion @ 1 min light, better at 2. overall: mild flavor, mild-med aroma, nice flowery fresh jasmine, yet again- light in strength. second infusion is alright, still rather mild in flavor. third infused not much left & watery. Not much astringency no harshness detected @ 3g. Will likely use 6g in the future, 3g not enough for my dull palate.

Overall: not bad, but mild.

part of my “In search of fuka” …

Tea Notes> Green Tea> Sencha (for more)

O-cha.com (review)(product link) $24.95/3.5oz(100g), 6.5/oz = $114/lb.

included a comparison with Ocha’s Fukamushi Supreme.

There is a difference ! uh, while i forgot which is which, the one on the left might be the fuka supreme.

Method(s): last used which is not the one depicted above: 5.5g + 4oz @ 155F x 1 min. I do bottle brew these and at one point one of them became less pleasant but i forgot which so what i just said is quite irrelevant…

Liquor: fuka supreme: cloudy, YM: settles quicker and clears up more (not evident in the pics above)

Flavor: YM: nice clean taste, more refined than the fuka supreme, greenish yet not hard grassy, good fukamushi with more of a matcha flavor to it, even this first infusion has a sweetish aftertaste to it.  The fuka supreme is more hard and a bit of a harsher tannin.

Overall: liked both…

14$/250g @ YSLLC

Leaf: Looks like yunnan leaf- wow im a genius. not that pretty, lots broken.

Method: usually drank this mug brew(or bottle) refilling water as needed. 190-200F water.

Flavor: some green, no oily/no fried= i like, mild tannin, some astringency, just a tad nutty, mild fruity/ mild BLC-ness, some “huanjinguyness” …pleasant overall as a chinese green, but not feeling it… tho i still re-confirmed my like for japanese greens… what can i do eh

Liquor on the “thick” side with tiny streaks of frothness (see second pic), brown stuff floaters in liquor (before straining or in mug).

super overinfused >30min, starting with 200F, this comes out like those young green puerh cakes i had from pu-shop.

Overall: its alright, mild-medium BLC-ness, mild flavor, not satisfied. much broken leaf.

O-cha.com (review)(product link) $27.95/50g/1.76oz, 15.79/oz = $253/lb. 🙂 i won the lotto baby …

Dry leaf: jp green tea, senchalike, seems darker and blueish hued compared to regular sencha.

more craptastic pics than usual, will try better next time 🙂 ….
#3 is regular sencha. (not same brightness,whitebalance) but you can see a difference.

Fluffed up leaf …. liquor, and #3 wet leaf.

Method: varied, also did the 140F 1g/1oz start with 1-2min, etc blah blah. this tea did very well in any condition. It was interesting how much more leaf expansion occurred with the gyo compared with sencha. it fluffed up like a balloon.

Flavor: liquor has lots of mouthfeel, upon swallow you feel the greenness tannins in the mouth doesnt really remind me of sencha, just that … green feel of tea, and then you get the flavor of … i call it “boiled spinach” that i’ll associate now with gyo until proven otherwise. Not much astringency (no dry or harsh or anything unpleasant), just some of the green-spinach tannin left over mouth. Strong flavored. (as i usually ended up doing it: 3g in 3oz water, 1 min, 1 min, from the 3rd infusion it continued with the full mouthfeel liquor however alot lower flavor)

Overall: seems like a HQ T howeva I dont really enjoy the flavor(s) at this point. maybe it’ll be craved in the future.

Green Tea Matcha Blend .Kirkland by ItoEn

December 25, 2009 at 6:54 pm | Posted in Green Tea, just green tea, Matcha, Sencha, Tea Reviews | 8 Comments

Found at Costco under their Kirkland brand, box mentions made by Ito En
~13$/100 tbags of 1.5g (150g, 5.3oz, 2.5/oz, ~ 40$/lb … meh not bad)

observe the careful use of f2.8  … sorry… no light handholder required it.

Method: many, 8oz-4oz, 100-200F. Settled on 4oz ~ 150F

Teabag: sucks. string is short. paper end thats supposed to hang on cup edge is soft and only fits thin cups. even then when the tbag fills with water it can pull on the shitty paper end and drag it into the water. Nylon bag for yall who have a thing for plastic + water. Does well to color the water greenish that quickly turns yellow. Dont know what the freak are those whiteish bits in the tbag.

Flavor: There is a faint matcha smell to it. Flavor is a low & bland mix of matcha and cheap sencha with a little roasted or maybe its some remnant grain somewhere in the sensory perceptorium. With 130F water i got some fishyness (likely in aroma, eitherway not my thing).  1 teabag in >4oz water tastes like water. Not much greenness not much sencha grass, no nothin’, no tannin or roughness or anything remotely exciting about this.

Overall: NO. lack o flavor yello vision.

Zhong Guo Cha (review)(product link)  G-4-1-1 Bird’s Tongue (Que She) * sample  … 50g /$29 = 16.5/oz = 264/lb

Method: 170F & 208F + 2oz x .5 & .5 & 1min

Flavor: (likely not as good as when fresh, so not having comparison here’s what i got:) start with some long jing then ends with fruity (what do i mean ? …  and some fruity fermentlike notes) and a little sweet. very nice. low then medium yet pleasant type of tannin/astringency.

Overall: this seems nice as a introduction, leaf ok. price not for me.

Fukamushi Sencha Supreme .O-cha.com

September 18, 2009 at 9:28 pm | Posted in Green Tea, Sencha, Tea Reviews | 2 Comments

part of my “In search of fuka” …

Tea Notes> Green Tea> Sencha (for more)

O-cha.com (review)(product link)  $22.95/3.5oz, 6.5/oz = $104/lb. i sure seem to be getting rich …

Dry leaf: green sencha, not all broken (as fuka is said to be, during manufacture), see pics, some leaf is quite long. (i’ve been drinking slowly out of this for at least a month) /Opening the bag in the first weeks i got a strong fresh  delicious sencha, was like wow! (thats what you get ordering straight from Japan, and good vendors = yum.)

…. ….    … ……………. 2g 4oz …. ….    … ……infusing…

#1 2min ….. ….    … …… #2 2min more …. ….    … ……2g wet leaf

#1   70C 2min

Flavor: good flavor, quite strong tho not in your face, good body, medium vegetal, some “spinach” (what i used to call “egg”. yah, i know, but hey, eh, oh well, getting there.), good aftertaste with tannin coating mouth, not harsh, some sweetness already!

#2   reinfusion ~60C 2min

Flavor: hmmm, some watery, low flavor, possibly extracted most in #1, tannins in mouth are more aparent, tho not bitter or harsh.

4g 4oz

4g in improvised scoop

#1   70C 1 min

Flavor: oh yum strong ass fuka! sencha sencha high (well also from the heat of the liquor makes me a little happy/agitated). sweet on the tongue, vegetal… gentle strongness… after coming down from the high, maybe the flavor strength is still medium. good lasting sweet aftertaste.

#2   60c 3 min

Flavor: now there’s some overinfusion here, tinge of strong tannin a bit harsh, not bitter.

Overall: very good (especially when fresh).

Uji Matcha .Yamashiro

June 14, 2009 at 4:00 pm | Posted in Green Tea, Matcha, Tea Reviews | 2 Comments

Found at Sunrise Mart NYC, $7.15/40g(1.41oz) = 5$/oz

Method: 2g +6oz @ 66C (too hot for me, added some 1-2 oz of room temp)

Flavor: strong kind of “tannins”, tending towards bitter :/ (i say tending but i feel it as bitter). can feel powder on palate+tongue. drinking this first thing in the morning and im getting lots of stomach movement/churning. Other subtleties i didnt notice, the bitter part ended my interest in this.

some faint fishyness to aroma … not helping me like it…

Overall: nope …

Tea Notes> Green Tea> Sencha (for more)

ItoEn NY Store (review)(product link)  $8/2oz, also at $64/lb.

compared side be side to Chiran Kanayamidori

Method: 4g leaf, 4oz water at 65C (Makino got around 61C), ~ 1 min.

Leaf: Japanese green tea, with a yellow tint to it. Chiran is dark green. (cant compare leaf pics well as its different days one with more direct sun)

4g. then Middle pic is Makino Left, Chiran Right

Liquor: Chiran is green, Makino has a hint of yellow.

Flavor: there’s the main green sencha-fuka thick greenness, but compared to Chiran Kanayamidori fuka this Makino has more bitter “tannins”? (yes the bitter kind, not just regular concentrated stuff), and is less flavorful. Chiran more pleasant – more enjoyable “flavor tannins”, and is “sweet” compared to Makino.
(another take into consideration: makinohara’s water was a couple degrees cooler). So even if lowering water temps or shortening infusion i dont think i’ll like the Makino as there isn’t much flavor to it. (yup, tried ~50C the bitter stuff still in there).

Overall: not bad, but the bitter is not good 4 me. it’ll probably be just fine at work where i just drink whatever and dont notice, but at home with no distractions this wont do.

ItoEn NY Store (review)(product link)  $11/2oz, also at $88/lb.

i went to the Itoen store about 2 weeks ago, this how it went down:
me to the white man behind the counter: YO ! i wan somma youz fukamushis.
he: fu…ck..a..mooshy? *confused look*
me: yea, sencha fukamooshy, you kno, like deep steamed or somfin’
main lady gives him a stabbing look: chiran and makinohara
he still confused turns to fridge behind. fumbles and grabs the item, opens it and allows me to stick my schnoz and take a whiff, grab a pinch and make a sale.
well i guess he learned what a fuka is…

Leaf: might be japanese green tea … IT IS !!!

pics not whitebalanced or corrected so colors are a bit whack (esp last one)

Method: 4oz water @ 70C + 4g leaf x ~1min. Usually do 3 infusions in day to day drinking.

Liquor is darker than Dens fuka maki(not easily compared with my pics). Stuff in liquor settles quicker than Den’s clearing the liquor.

Flavor: drank this one right after Dens fuka maki (well ive been drinking from all the senchas for a couple weeks now). More “body” to the liquor. More green flavor, with some variation in flavor/sensation. Much more tannin coating the mouth; more enjoyable, it has, like, a personality. (to take into consideration that I also added like .5 oz water to the result because the leaf sucked up more water than Dens.) Astringency low. More aftertaste.
/* Seinfeld
Attendant:
More anything ?
Jerry: More everything !
*/

Overall: very good imho, more bang for the same buck.

Tea Notes> Green Tea> Sencha (for more)

Den’s Tea.com (review)(product link)  $11/2oz, also at $85/lb.

Leaf: looks like sencha to me 😛

Method: 4oz water @ 72C + 4g leaf x ~1min (also been drinking it at work with many variations of leaf, time, water temp). Usually do 3 infusions from it.

Flavor: well, first you get the fuka liquor which is that green opaque full of stuff liquid. then you enjoy a nice taste of grassness like in sencha but more “dense” and thicker with that green tannin on the tongue. there is i’d say low  astringency. in the back of throat sometimes i feel a tiny something towards bitter but that could be overinfusion. sometimes depending on strength i also get some fleeting sweet aftertaste feeling. To me any hint of yellow in the color suggests overinfused or something wrong with the leaf.

Overall: good fuka sencha. It has done well in many conditions, resists ok to overinfusion. not my first one so cant say i’m overwhelmed or excited after drinking it, but i can say i’ve been missing it if i dont have any … tho that could be the tea addiction…

grtdgreen-tea-qingdaoFound at H-mart ~ 1.6$
was unsure to buy it since it said “flavored beverage”, but there’s no sugar, so why not
distributed by Wang food, made by Qingdao Tsingtao beer & asahi … unfortunately this is not beer or a malt beverage.

Smell: tiny: honey!?

Flavor: some tannin, liquid… mild flavor of …something, maybe some mild (sugarless)honey-like, not roasted. not very weird, but not very enjoyable either.

Overall: not for me.

T2U Tea to You Green Tea .Dongwon

Found at H-Mart (~2$ !… there were 3 kinds, got the unflavored, unsugared one) drinkt2u.com 3 flavors, says available at WholeFoods… Product of Korea.

gt2u-green-1 gt2u-green-2 gt2u-green-3

Package: i actually got it because it announces on its label: “Tea leaves are brewed for 11 minutes” – such honesty never been seen on a RTD bottle i figured there must be some translation mistake, or that’s how RTD companies really make bottled teas (btw i emailed Itoen on that a couple days ago, no response yet ;)). Also the bottle seems to be made of aluminum.

Smell: tiny- fruity sweet?!?

Flavor: green tea, cant say what kinds… there’s a citric twist to the flavor but not a citric-vitamin C property to the liquid itself… if i can put that in words… There’s minimal tea tannin or astringency. There is a tiny strangeness to this drink…. i mean it tastes alright, low astringency – which should make me happy (and reminded me of the weil line of itoen teas)… but it fails to excite my tastebuds … i cant put my finger on it… i think for ease of expression: the flavor is somewhat off? to what i would “recognize” as green tea… sorry dong won. Cant sense any roasted or pan fried as i can in itoen’s. i think its all got something to do with that ascorbic acid or whatnot- even tho it doesn’t feel strong, something is off-ing the flavors…

Overall: not bad, but i’m not fond of the flavor. or price.

unsweetened green tea .365 (Whole Foods brand)

March 11, 2009 at 5:07 pm | Posted in Green Tea, RTD Bottled Tea, Tea Reviews | Leave a comment

Found at Whole Foods Market/NY $1.3

organic. not sure when tea became inorganic but yeah… i was also wanting to buy the jumbo eggs, and one of the workers at WF kept suggesting the organic jumbo eggs: “those are organic” pointing to the brown ones. “alright”, and i grab the chicken layered, white, inorganic, calcium shells, filled with pre-embryonic nutritive goo. uh… the dingo ate your inorganic baby ms. inorganic chicken. leave it to people to redefine a word and make money off it…

Flavor: citric acid (“lemon-like  sensation”) combined with a pack of tannins = quite astringent (and dry mouth feel). overinfused feel. Some low tea “flavor” when letting air pass out the nose. also present: a sort of roasted? sensation/id go even to say some faint tobacco in the nose…. ugh…

Overall: i don’t like it. no list for you.0_re

Tea Notes> Green Tea> Sencha (for more)

Den’s Tea.com (review)(product link)  $6.5/2oz, also at $50/lb, nice price.

Leaf: looks like sencha to me 😀, maybe i’d say there isnt much long leaf in here ?

Method: cupwan, gaiwan, mug. mostly 4g in 4oz.

4g…………………………………….. + 4oz & ….. 1min = ……………………………………..&& . . 2min =
this color correction is starting to annoy me, but the liquor color seems right, even tho that paper is off…

Flavor:

2g/ 4oz/ ?? temp (1/3 20C water + 2/3 93C)/ think i did less than 1 min.

sort of mild, not really watery, some flavor, green, etc

4g/ 40z/ ??temp/ 2min x 2

good but still i’d say medium strength flavor, astringency low

4g/ 4oz/ ??temp/ 1min, 2min (See pics above)

#1- 1 min: good flavor, still “medium” strength, but i like this infusion.
#2- 2 min: some astringency is present but its sort of a mild green tannin + a sweetness?/”roundness” to it = its not harsh, not unpleasant!

some aftertaste, not bad.

liquor is cloudy – i thought only fukamushis are like that, tho this wasnt as cloudy as the fuka i had.

wet leaf tastes neutral, not bad. looks like some leaf stems are included.

Overall: its a pleasant tea, easy to drink,  sort of a “everyday” feel to it, mild-medium flavor, low astringency.

DavidsTea.com (review)(product link)  $18.75/50g = 10.65/oz, 170/lb …i hope i did that right
review sample courtesy of David’s Tea.

a little problem with the label: it says this is a rooibos apple caramel 😉 but sounds tasty 😀

Method: ~2g, 4oz, ~180F(in cup), 2min. (also did others, i tried a 4g,4oz was too strong).

Flavor: vegetal, plant leaf, grass, some green astringent, a little bit of “foody” (as i call it “egg” flavor). I didnt sense any roast in flavor or aroma.

Aftertaste: Most of the time you get a sort of dry/roughness in the mouth (depending on strength of infusion). But also there’s a quite interesting & pleasant component: about 2 minutes after drink, breathe thru mouth, then swallow, you feel a sweetness in the whole mouth (not just throat). This lasts pretty long(depending on infusion strength), even at half hour i still feel something!! … it reminds me of drinking ginseng oolong. Miss the good parameters (temp/time/amount) and i got it quite astringent and harsh vegetal.

Overall: good flavor & aftertaste, con: price, sensitive to parameters (temp/time/amount).

Tea Notes> Green Tea> Matcha (for more)

Den’s Tea.com (review)(product link)  $12/20g = 17/oz = 204/lb

Leaf: uhm …powder?

Method: various, room temp water, 60-70-90C. various drinking teawares. No chasen, no plans to get-chasen makes foam – me no like foamyness incl beer  “head”… plus it looks like you’re preparing shaving lather (just mal-associations in my mind.) anywho. Maybe most of the time i end up making koicha(more matcha) rather than usucha(more water).

Using a strainer i sift the matcha a little, then pour water thru, then whisk & squish around with the strainer in the mug until clumps are dissolved (see vid). Tried the matcha in bottle and shook, but not being strained clumps persisted ended up in my mouth (plus, shaking bottle makes foam.)

Flavor: creamy, “soft“/smooth, “grass“/wheatgrass?(havent had some in years), not powdery, not astringent(ok some low in sides of mouth), just flavor = very nice 🙂
sweetness (in aftertaste, after 1-2 min- depending on concentration.)

Overall: my first matcha, a bit milder than i immagined. but good pleasant flavor, no/minimal astringent (compared to the supermarket Maeda-en matcha which sucked). pleasant aftertaste. Definitely like this matcha thing.

Flavor: seems dusty-powdery to my mouth, add a coughing sensation :/
astringent, not smooth, not sweet, not creamy :\

a bit similar to YMY instant powder tea…but iirc YMY’s wasn’t as tanninic/astringent.

Overall: i see green powder. i like to look at it, but i don’t wanna taste it.

Amazing-green-tea.com (review)(product link) 5.45/50g = 3/oz, 36/lb
review sample courtesy of Julian @ amazing-green-tea.

compared to my previous HSMF experiences ZGC, Chado

Leaf: seems fresh, strong smell of “green” maybe “grass”
Different aspect, curly, more like bilochun
Seem to be plucked from younger, top leaf & bud vs ZGC/Chado(older bigger/lower leaves.)

Method: 60C/140F on first, 80C/176F and up on the next (measured in cup)

Taste: compared to HSMF ZGC, Chado, this one is more towards green/grass, not much “hay”, less “pan fried” sensation & less “oily” (which made it different and more pleasant to me).

“green astringency” is pulled with hotter infusion,

after first sip seems to “block” flavor of next sips, which taste mostly green “astringent”/tannin in back, sides.

sometimes felt a tiny sweet in the aftertaste (especially with longer infusion)

pleasant “green” aftertaste

Overall: this is a good green tea, might be good quality too. I enjoyed it due to lack of “pan-friedness/oily” i’ve come to be bored of in chinese teas.

Leaf: looks ok, kinda varied, some broken leaves. buds, many cute silvery buds . This tea is called Pai mu tan, Bai mu dan and …White hairy monkey; hairy monkey sounds right, tho i dont like to drink wet hairy monkeys that much.

Method: 5g + 4oz 60C water x 3min. (also tried 40C, 100C in other “experiments”)

excuse the unprocessed unsharpened some darker imgs, me so lazy.

Taste: long-jing-ish, “pan-fried oil” taste of chinese green tea, a low tad of astringency was present …eh. Lots of these “fried oily” components remain and coat the tongue and leave a long “aftertaste” on your mouth, sometimes a slight hint of sweet in the aftertaste. Reinfusions go ok, green “astringency/tannin” gets stronger. Not much in the smell/aroma department. No flowery from this one, and not sure if this is the same as white peony but many moons ago i had a bagged white peony which was delicious and flowery – White Peony .Triple Leaf Tea

Wet leaf: seems mostly it would be bud leaf but some are chopped, not very homogeneous looking.

Overall: its ok, doesn’t work for me.

NYC Halloween Parade, looking at the masks, what else to get to drink but tea 🙂

found at some deli store 2$/.5L … really.

half the taste, flavor, astringency of Ito En’s Oi Ocha, but good mix, no weirdness, no lemon/citric tastes.

label milks the crap, the cap has a big arse USDA ORGANIC logo on it, not the company’s logo … silly times we’re living in…

Overall: ok, too “expensive”. otoh they got an oolong bottle which is better.

Raw Tea Green Tea .Smirnoff

$1.5 @ (Super) Target (FL) Never seen a SUPER Target before, seems to have apples and salad alongside the usual. Did have lots of BEER AND WINE, had like (yes i’m from LA-LA Land) the whole friggin selection of Negra Beers: Modelo, Especial, Coronas !!! … helloo New York state and some stupid (East Coast) laws whereby i have to waste time driving for a bottle of damn beer or Manischewitz wine (really dig this sweet stuff).

i passed on the store brand bottled teas… The itoen teas tea bottles i’ve seen at all the Targets i been to, $3.99/2L is your best choice here.

pics unedited, sorry ’bout the darkness, color, tilt.

Label: “malt beverage” with “brewed tea” …what sort of beer weirdness is this ? …but i got it anyway.

Aroma: pop the top: smell like almost nothing

Taste: sweet –> some sort of lemon? + bubbley feeling + alcohol throat and sting in mouth.  + sweetness.

… this tastes more like some sort of a alcoholic soda than either beer or tea anything… eeh. I know what it reminds me of: Mike’s Hard Lemonade.. same sort of feeling – different sort of taste, more Shitty for Smirnoff, More Better for Mike’s Beer lemonade.

Overall: crapola. No. not even if needing of getting drunk.

*PS: alcohol is bad, damages liver, stomach linings, direct toxic effect on some cells, hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, etc etc. Alcohol+ smoking a major cause of esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer and more.

Here i am roadtrippin again thru our beautiful country. This time my red rental roams thru the “scenic” hwy 1 in Florida. Somewhere after the City of Cocoa 😀 …after 150 miles of “scenic” drive i find a Winn Dixie where i can go pee, ah, i also got some tea !

$1.39 @ Winn Dixie Supermarket…. then went to one of the dozen beaches around

Smell: lemon … 😦 oh boy here we go again…

Taste: water, lemon tangyness, tartness, + some bitterness water, no other apparent flavor other than the lemon tangyness, not even a clean lemon flavor just like some sort of lemon skin tangyness… 😦

Overall: organic unsweetened crapola

part of the drown my sorrow with three bottles of tea day.
iced tea with lemon .teany,
Morrocan Mint Green Tea .Honest Tea
,
green tea with ginseng .teany
.
see the level- thats how much i could drink from them.

smell: some lemon & … fruit? medication?… a smell i cant pinpoint, need a word, having lapse in memory.

taste:
liquid,
no sugar (labeled 10g total),
astringency/bitterness
no green tea
mint? what mint, oh yeah, hmmm. well there is some mint aftertaste after the bitterness goes.
this feels like they over brewed the mint and components too long until the plant taste started to give it this bitterness. also theres not enough mint in this. maybe other components are interacting and diminishing it.

update: i added sugar: nice and sweet now – much better – some minty flavor but not like fresh looseleaf tea (did they use enough mint ???). there isnt much nasty sugar aftertaste. some freshness from the mint in the aftertaste. pretty good now!!!

how much mint etc compared to some real fresh loose tea? somewhere around 1/2

i really dont get it. either these people dont know how to make something good (that i could like) or they’re trying to make something that will just sell.

Sencha Megami .Ito En

February 28, 2008 at 4:19 pm | Posted in Green Tea, just green tea, Sencha, Tea Reviews | Leave a comment

ItoEn Flagship Store. $6/oz = 72/lb.

second ‘real’ sencha, 1st was Kawane.

dry leaf: low smell. leaf seems smaller cut than Kawane. picture is of the entire 1oz, it looks small but leaf has small volume and so occupies less space in threeDee thus not disturbing the time space continuum… right? right.

this one is a fukamushi cha: its deep-steamed (longer), loose leaf is finer, infusion is cloudy.

infusion: ~1.5min in 4oz @ 130F (they say 1tsp 6oz 176F, i’ll try that later)

liquor: dark green and cloudy (with lots of floating thingys.)

taste:
interesting
, green vegetal different than kawane, i like this one, has a little flavor similar to “egg” flavor (as in this oolong huang jin gui), cant say any astringency? …
2nd infusion has a sweet aftertaste.
3rd infusion watery.

overall: i like this one. seems similar experience to the Sencha from Zhong Guo Cha, but don’t remember that having sweet aftertaste.

ItoEn Flagship Store, $5.5/lb = $66/lb

my first ‘real’ sencha (vs some dubious origin sencha i had >> Kowa), got along with another- Sencha Megami

dry leaf: aroma sweet grassy. picture is of the entire 1oz, it looks small but leaf has small volume and so occupies less space in 3D.

infusion: ~1.5min in 4oz @ 120F (they say 1tsp 6oz 176F, i’ll try that later)

taste:
some vegetal “generic” greenish reminds of chinese green panfried-oily stuff. . good straight flavor.
2nd infusion starts tasting a little overextracted?- not really astringent?maybe some acidity? in back of throat (very mild but thats how i feel it). some grass aftertaste on tongue.

overall: …not very exciting. eh. (I’ll try different infusions but i only expect it to enhance previous flavors.)

Weil for Tea – Green White .Ito En

February 24, 2008 at 4:10 pm | Posted in Green Tea, just green tea, RTD Bottled Tea, Tea Reviews | Leave a comment

found at Ito En’s Flagship Store. *discontinued*

Aroma: very light, couldn’t really tell what it is. sort of sweet.

Taste: light roasted, green tea (couldn’t pinpoint what, not real clear), sort of softness? very very mild astringency(it doesnt feel over-infused as their other bottled teas, like oi ocha, even teas tea.)

Overall: Good but flavor too mild for me and even with the lack of astringency i prefer their oi ocha japanese green. also too expensive (as this entire Weil for tea line is, $1.9/can (245ml)… i like their Darjeeling better.)

Organic Bangkok Transporting Green Tea .Harney and Sons

February 11, 2008 at 5:36 pm | Posted in Green Tea, RTD Bottled Tea, Tea Reviews | 4 Comments

could that name BE any longer ?

i guess it could, since i left out the coconut ginger part…

smell: start with this because it disturbed me: pickled cabbage aroma… nice one ! i then was afraid to drink it… but i talked myself into it: “Come on old man, you LOVE cabbage” , “DOOO IT !!!!” OH MY GOD I CANT STOP SMELLING THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!

taste: pink. huh? dunno, just popped in my mind (maybe i associate bangkok, oh wait the label is pink). again as in the previous taste: their Black Currant: alot of “stuff” in the liquid: sourness, this time some clear bitterness (low, but it bothers me). i couldn’t really tear apart into precise flavors, dont care :: i dont like it. THE END.

update: had to comeback and +add this: alot of nasty aftertaste…. BOOOOOOO !!!

how about i transport you back to the store and get my $2.4 back, and that 5 minutes spent in line…

oh crap, i think im getting some diarrhea………… no… false alarm.

Japanese Green Tea (oi ocha) 2L bottle .Ito En

February 10, 2008 at 4:44 pm | Posted in Green Tea, just green tea, RTD Bottled Tea, Tea Reviews | 4 Comments

This is your big boy, brother of its little sibling oiocha .5L
the most liters of clean bottled tea one can buy… in the WORLD !!!!

and its pretty good taste too !

Pkg: nice and symetric, contains just green tea and vitamin c (works to keep it good). very low level of bullshit on antioxidants etc.

Price: in my little supermarket … 6$ , sort of expensive, might be better priced elsewhere with more population, like Manhattan/Chinatown/Flushing.

Taste: green tea – the type which tastes roasted-toasty-pan-fried, astringency (medium-mild). Not quite as clear taste as a fresh looseleaf brew.

Compared to others, cant really say much difference: Pokka’s can of green tea seemed more defined, Tea’s Tea green (still ito en) seemed less astringent, Adagio’s Green seemed less defined, with a weird little tiny flavor in there.

Overall: the best bottled tea out there (in the USA, in a 2L pkg)

*no, ito en doesn’t pay me in moneys, stocks or free shit. i just like their product.

Found at Whole Foods Market, $1.5

Dont remember having this before, so i thought i’d give it some tongue time.
Was imagining it to be like the ItoEn’s OiOcha Green Tea but it went like this:

flavor: green tea on the roasted/fried flavor side, no nasty baggy tastes, astringency is low and blends nice with the green flavor. The Pokka’s Japanese Green Tea had a more of a crispy grassy green flavor.

overall: GOOD! i like it. you go on the list.

Mango Green Tea .Adagio Teas

January 24, 2008 at 8:46 pm | Posted in Green Tea, Tea Reviews | Leave a comment

Adagio Teas 6$/4oz or $15/lb +S&H … cheap, but its mixed, flavored… tea.
ordered this along with the bottled teas,
just to see what mixed tea tastes like…
also mango is my favorite fruit (to eat, not to clean and slice every little bit from the pit.)

Dry:
smells good, maybe too pungent — additives?!
looks like some sort of flat green chopped up. with little bits of yellow mango.

Method: leaf + water @ 180 x 3min

dry leaf_________ infusion 1_______ in the cupwan_____infusion 2 _____ _ wet leaf

Liquor: yellow-green, second infusion dubiously fluorescent green.

Taste: a mild green astringency dominating + mild mango..ish?
<going to clean tongue, feel confused.>>
clean tongue — same — a bit confusing.
added sugar: brings more of the mango…ish taste to the tongue, not much green feel anymore.
the mango bits taste sort of like mango, without sweetness,
the leaves also contain some sort of flower petals?

Overall: its ok. smells better than tastes. would i get it again … eh… probably not.

Japanese Green Tea .Pokka

January 13, 2008 at 2:17 pm | Posted in Green Tea, just green tea, Tea Reviews | 2 Comments

1 can $1.5 incl tax, found somewhere on Broadway, at a Sushi restaurant.
label says made in Singapore for Pokka of Japan, under strictest control.

As i remember its better than the Green Tea.Pokka i tasted a while back.

Method: pay, open can, drink, take picture of can, give crazy look back to people looking weird at your for taking pictures of a can!

Taste: Green tea, good, nice flavor, maybe sencha, mildly fried sensation. Astringency-tannin present at low intensity, unlike ItoEn’s teas. Its better than i remember, and somewhat more pleasant than ItoEn’s green tea. (unless my tongue is not at its best today.). I do have to revisit ItoEn’s products, its been too long since last time. Good thing their store is close by, i should check it out.

There are no weird tasting flavors, no cruddy bag tea astringency or vitamin C or anything unpleasant.

Aftertaste: low.

Again: Yes. and it goes on my list.

Pi Lo Chun .Adagio Teas

January 4, 2008 at 3:49 pm | Posted in Green Tea, just green tea, Tea Reviews | Leave a comment

Adagio Teas 17$/8oz , $27/lb … thats pretty cheap

leaf: see some snails, but the leaf doesnt look very good, kind of beat up, see some ‘hairs’, also some fine dust either pollen or broken ‘hairs’. Along this… one can also find… seeds(1st pic center and a little low right)…?! and something that looks like clumps of pollen(2nd pic) (or maybe its the clumps of broken ‘hairs’) not that i care about the former, but the later – seeds…?! ahem… never seen that before.

techniques:
@ 120F x 2-3min theres pretty strong green astringency-tannin back sides of mouth + tartness.
@ less than 100? F + 3 min or longer –> BLC flavor (green) + some ‘fruity’ somewhere around apricot skin (as i would imagine that would be like) but… a little tangy astringent-tanninic).
@ room temp water x ~10min –>better, more fruity bi-lo-chunnish, less tarty, & flavor held good for at least 3 more infusions. here the liquor: light green.

taste: Compared to Wing Hop Fung’s BLC Adagio’s seems not very defined in taste, more astringent-tanninic+tartness, and seems more sensitive to “high” temperatures.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
^ LEFT: Adagio (gaiwan) …..^RIGHT: WHF (in my*sniff* broken cup)

wet leaf: after about 3 times, the leaf almost unfurled completely you can see many leafs are cut, there is alot of little bits that escape if using the gaiwan, and also found some of the seeds.

overall: …uhh…the taste dont like too much, the dubious quality (leaf, seed,cuts,tannin) kind of deterring me from buying again.

Adagio Teas (review) 2$/ea or 24$/case of 15 + s&h, sometimes also found at Whole Foods.
Anteadote Black, Oolong, Green, White, Jasmine.

Package: Product of China. no “organic” wording on this one… nice 🙂 the label is really crooked, rotated on a corner… (if its the chinese packing plant, they should slap them around with a large trout.)

Liquor: golden-yellow meaning i hope tea is oxidated & most likely not much preservatives.

Smell: faint, imho a bit of medicinal but lets see taste.

Taste: some mild astringency-tannin back of throat/tongue, then swishing around feel “roasted-toasted fried” green tea taste – ok, tastes like tea. no medicinal flavors, no citric acid-lemon. But… after tasting the 4 teas from them i have to say there is sort of a funky flavor in there, in all them bottles… its not the lemon taste, its a weird faint medicinal maybe kind of funk…

Faint aftertaste, but doesn’t feel completely watery, some remnants on tongue and back of throat but again, faint. i think it kind of feels fatty-coating on the tongue in the aftertaste(might be wrong).

Overall: taste is mild-medium, ok, not bad, i wouldnt go out of my way to buy it again, and if ito en was there i’d pick that first. compared to itoen’s green tea, adagio is more mild, subdued, less astringent-tanninic, less defined, and it also has a funk-o-flavor on my tongue.

Zhong Guo Cha G-17-3-2 Sencha *sample . 15$/50g = 8.52/oz = 136/lb ? is that right?

looks like sencha, it must be sencha 🙂 imho kind of small cuts but what do i know about proper sencha?! the other senchas i tried from Kowa, Chado seemed to be bigger.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

liquor: nice and green, tiny particulate matter giving it a ‘cloudy’ appearance.

taste: strong presence, vegetal, feels ‘fresh’ in some way to me, a small twiggy feel, a tiny feel of sweet on the tip of the tongue that goes with a small reminder of “egg” flavor (as in this oolong huang jin gui), some astringency feeling green.

leaf bits are small and so hard to drink straight from cup (ok, actually i did drink straight from the cup, and chewed on some of the little bits of leaf), but if one wants to down one real fast you’ll get a mouthfull. so you need a good strainer.

this feels like a good quality tea & leaf-‘cos of the strong flavor, but i’m not experienced with many senchas.

Your Image Thumbnailfound at Target next to the “calorie burning” crap, enviga (also owned by Coca-Cola) price <2 >1

label: nice, brings me a memory of sorta Western-cowboy
… where’s my horse and kettle….

sugar: 22g /8oz(240ml) almost like snapple 24/8oz, i think coke is like 34g/8oz …so… its sweet enough.

Taste:
-> sweet sensation
–> strange perfume-y around back of mouth …this must be the arrrrrroma
—> tea ! damn! ill be friggin damned! Coca-Cola managed to create more green-tea tasting drink better than Snapple?!
—–> astringency, oh, unfortunately at first taste one can feel a cruddy cheap-green tea teabag astringency settling on the tastebuds.
after 1-2 sips just like most tea drinks, taste changes and don’t feel all the details, remains only the sweetness as the major component.

Overall: ! surprised! it was not bad, and much better than snapple’s green tea crap, so it goes on my RTD list.

Yes! another new flavor. I love good tea!

first green tea where the liquor came out green! (picture is not green, but trust me, it is 😛 )

flavor: just like it smells, green, fresh, a tad on a flowery side but its not predominant
somewhere out of a pungently fresh green vegetal, has its own specific flavor, never had before. maybe reminds of 1/3 of the biluochun mixed + 1/3 kuding + 1/3 smoky black yunnan 🙂

NICE ! I LIKE 😀

Pictures: infusion 1, 2, wet leaf

10oz dixiecup + tea about .75cm + roomtemp water to half + rest with 200F water
good param
#1 ~3min : good strong smell, flavor of “pan-fried” green not as strong but getting there, seems on the watery side tho, maybe should’ve infused longer.
#2 ~3min : i’d say something of a greenish astringency twiggy, pan-friedness low now.

~2scoops ~5 oz ~170?F
liquor: nice and yellow-a tad fluorescent 🙂 , i hope its natural
smell: ok
flavor: good, cant describe exactly, i’ll say its somewhere around pan-fried…vegetal…
wet leaf looks green and young

2 infusions (~10oz) kept all taste.
3rd infusion ~6oz lost “pan-friedness” more green vegetal

not the most original/complex/strong flavor…the huan shan mao feng, similar taste profile >> fried flavor <<, plus… i like the leaf better.

infusion reveals bits and pieces, seems this is the normal Huang Shan Mao Feng appearance.

150F – taste: flavor medium-low strength: green pan fried oil sensation.
did 3 infusions = 12 oz.
not enough flavor strength for me, seems less than HSMF (hair tip) from Chado. but this one is not hair tip.

200F – taste: flavor medium strength: green pan fried oil sensation. + deep astringency-bitterness. (duh! what did you think boiling water would do to a green leaf???).

will have to redo, more leaf, temp 160-180-190

i drank it, then cursed.

smells good ofcourse
taste: … ehm… huh? mild , hmmm…. astringency, mild jasmine, …errr…

    try #2-5

    very pretentious leaf, gives me attitude and no good reliable taste.

    conclusion: hot water = astringency, unpleasant.
    cold water= less astringency mild/more enjoyable jasmine flavor.

    i feel no CHI , QI … ?… rather …slapped in the face…

    but anyway, here’s the shits description: smell 1/3 lemony. drink: 1/3 flavor of ?tea? mixed with 0.5/3 vitamin c or whatever everybody mixes this shit with these days. = .no. rebuy.

    issues…:

    1. Forgot to take a pic of the cap, a Roosevelt saying “Women are like teabags…” jesus. whatever it said after that didnt matter anyway. but maybe its just me.

    2. wtf is with the name? just green tea… hmmm… are they gonna sue me? the wayback machine only got me archived in feb’07 with the category name

    3. now along organic, natural, ecgc pc dc, antioxidant, and other bullshit the tea companies have a new label to wank: ‘FAIR TRADE’. like i give a rats ass, and like i believe any of their bullshit – how can we really check anyway how much the tea pickers get paid, without it being relayed thru many intermediaries.

    did drink something good today tho, >> yeah its looseleaf tea, thank god!

    Finally have found you!… green “tea” by snapple… seems to be out on the East coast /NY, not on the west coast (at the time of this review.)

    Taste: low-medium flavor of….unknown…+ sweet (the diet version has splenda), some tea flavor (but low)

    Overall: disappointing, but not surprised.

    no, id not get this. rather drink water, or some coke, sprite, 7up(has too much bubble), pepsi(gives me tummy ache after too many mL.). Ergo, NOT on my FavoriTeas Bottled Tea list

    UPDATE: a better tasting (as per my tastebuds) sweet green tea drink is from Gold Peak

    emergency alternatives in case of green tea 500mcg EGCG AOX antioxidant withdrawal:

    • chew some grass
    • eat some leaves
    • hump a tree.

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

    wet leaf: looks like small tender young top leaf and buds.

    liquor photo: L is 3 minute, R is after the infusion liquor was left a couple hours. (thats alot of oxidation going on!)

    smell: somewhat medicinal… not my favorite

    140F
    – method 1:1 leaf volume:water volume ratio @ ~40sec: flavor: seems more distinct taste than previous, same sweetness perceived on the back sides of the tongue, and its particular ‘green’-astringent taste.
    – regular brew method: flavor: a strange sensation: warm mildly sweet feeling with even more mild ‘bitter’/astringent feel. brewed longer the sweetness did not become stronger, but there was an unpleasant aftertaste – like after drinking earl grey with lots of sugar.

    190F
    flavor: pop of medium-high dose of astringency-bitterness on the tip of the tongue, then tongue senses some medicinal mixed green vegetal flavor. theres a touch of sweetness in here somewhere. …dont know…. maybe i brewed too much leaf. 1.3 tbsp measurer 6oz 190F 3min.
    usually dont get this strong out of greens. neither the liquor color change! (must be the young leaves)
    redo.

    done with this. not very exciting to me, .no.

    liquor yellow

    taste: flavor 3/7 some kind of strange green tea bag concoction… an awful sour powerful astringency hit my tastebuds… it reminds me of aspirin dissolved in water. After it thoroughly numbed my mouth, astringency and other tastes could not be felt like normal, had to rinse my mouth couple times…

    Drinking green tea on empty stomach

    February 4, 2007 at 11:04 pm | Posted in Green Tea, Tea and Health | Leave a comment

    I dont have any problem drinking green tea on an empty stomach. so called ‘stomach punch’ (nausea).

    I regularly drink alot of tea on an empty stomach.

    I know people that have problem drinking tea on an empty stomach, and also taking vitamins on an empty stomach none of which i have had any trouble with.

    The problem i have is with having an empty stomach for a long time… get a little dizzy and sweaty (from the hypoglycemia caused by not eating and no adequate response from my organs). But green tea does not have anything to do with that in my system.

    about 5 min later i pop the top and the liquid was HOT HOT HOT!!!

    that sounds all dope and shit, but i bought a tea…so how’s it taste???

    well i shoulda remembered that one time at band camp when i put milk in green tea – it wasn’t nice – i didn’t enjoy that taste experience. so how’s this?

    taste: milky, it has sugar, some tea flavor. don’t know if its the combination with the tea but it tasted like powdered cheap milk concentrate or some shit.

    liquor: green (finally. i guess the light-proof can protects from oxidation as well).
    taste: smoother than the plastic bottles (oi ocha).
    astringency: 2.5/7 tanninic (less than the oi ocha) with a twist of fried oil as usual(less than oi ocha).
    flavor: 2.5/7 (less than the oi ocha), mildly green grass …mild…

    [2009 USA bottle pics coming soon] Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

    Taste: A toasted sensation first comes, then its covered and not felt as much in the following sips.  There’s alot of “tannin/astringency” of the nicer kind (green leaf, not the cheap teabag kind that end up towards bitter.) Its much stronger than its lighter colored label oi ocha family – oi ocha .ito en … stronger taste? well, more like stronger tannin and more astringent, as for the flavor, it doesnt feel as “improved” as is the astringency… Alot of tanin is left in the mouth/back of palate, lick it feels green … maybe over-infused sencha. really over infused… with boiling water… hmmm, just noticed it matches oi: over-infused… heh

    Overall: kinda bummed it doesn’t have a distinctive flavor. Not sure i’d buy this again tho, its too extracted, and the tannin is too prominent. Its good for a bottled tea, but I’ll stay with the regular oi ocha.

    side note: had the pork bao (char siew pork) at Famima!! but didn’t enjoy it- breading was nice and fluffy tho not as fluffy as the one i had in Chinatown (forgot store); filling was sweet, then a taste of canned meat(kinda bitter), then some pork taste (filling was quite similar to the one in Chinatown).

    flavor: contains mostly lemon sensations with some itsy-bitsy grass undertones (sidetones?).
    astringency: dont remember

    again: no. (personal preferrence)(when calling it green tea i expect green tea taste detected in equal amounts to other contents, otherwise just call it a fancy name like tazo likes to do).

    Here we have a can of Green Tea made by ‘UCC’ Ueshima Coffee Co of Japan.
    Can’s description is not far from the truth as i see it:
    “we present: mild body and aroma to you”

    maybe being refrigerated numbs my tastebuds but here it is: watery flavor 1.5/7 (I’m exaggerating), astringent 2/7, there is a little tiny sneaky lemon flavor but maybe its just me., aftertaste 0/7.

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usyay! finally found a good un-sugarized bottled tea … strong full flavor ‘pleasantly’ astringent tea taste, tho faintly green, there was some toasty something taste in there … ok… flavor, astringent.
    feels over-extracted… leaf kept too long in water. But, better taste than most teabags i’ve tried, not as good as a good looseleaf tea, but its a fast, ready to drink substitute.

    wish they’d sell this at Ralphs or Savon or Whole foods…but probably those have exclusive contracts with lipton or some other marketers of sugarized ‘tea’ shit.

    mm….the health benefits of >insert plant name here< (not broccoli… please)
    name a plant and it can cure everything from diarrhea to dogbites drug addiction doofyness and cancer. Why people seek and believe unproven ridiculousities is part of human behavior. Misinformation, lack of information, distrust of information, ignoramus, hope of cheapness, illusions of naturality and organicness, opportunists & quacks looking to make business attract and perpetuate such ideas ad infinitum.

    I don’t deny the benefit & wonder of nature (& plants); After all, it has been the source of many drugs & cures – but these have been studied & tested for many years before conclusions were made.

    But, when substance/root/plant/flower claims to cure multiple diseases including HIV/AIDS and cancer … that should be a bit suspicious.

    ———————————————————————-

    Tea, like most plants, grows according to its environment and nutrients. It has not been designed or genetically altered to produce an exact amount of substances in its leaf.

    you have random amount of substance in tea leaf –> no standard way of extracting exact amount of substance from leaf (at home, brewing your tea) –> + LOW absorption from intestine & LOW bioavailability[1]  –> unknown/unreliable/unproven amount of active substance that would reach/interfere/destroy cancer cells/affect a disease mechanism towards better  –>  = unreliable end-result + no proven decrease in disease or mortality attributable to tea alone.

    source: NEJM 344:632-636 march 1, 2001.

    Gastric Cancer Death is ~10 times greater in Japan compared to the USA.

    All cancers incidence rate:
    USA: ~460/100000 (2005, all ages, both sexes, adjusted rate)
    Japan: ??? cant find corresponding
    China: ??? cant find corresponding

    ———————————————————————-

    How does one accept that green tea has any beneficial effect in preventing cancer ?(for example in Japan & China where they have such a high consumption of good green tea, and yet… gastric cancer – especially that the liquid passes thru the organ in question.)

    ———————————————————————-

    I don’t see how you would fiercely advocate the “benefits” of green tea… when presently there is no proof that TEA directly affects anything long term for the benefit of disease/cancer prevention or treatment.

    Think about all the junk food in this country(USA), cheap ‘toxic’, ‘hormone infested’ ‘pesticide laden’ un-organic trash that we eat (right? that’s what the organic all-natural dont-eat-the-chicken people say)… and that’s what you lose? 3 years ? or… it looks like you gain 6 years by not drinking green tea if by comparison to People’s Republic of China.

    Since the country of Andorra has the highest life expectancy, they must eat super clean, natural, extra-organic, drink 10L antioxidants & tea a day, stuff themselves full of vitamins(oh wait they get them from all the natural foods), exercise 365 days/yr, don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol, don’t drive, don’t smoke crack…. right? i don’t think so.

    …so

    Do i drink tea for its health benefits ? No.
    i drink tea to enjoy the many flavors a green leaf can offer.

    i was at the ikea in Burbank, thirsty, went to the soda machines outside and i press the water bottle button and this thing comes out. … hey green tea! why not … lets try

    then this carbonized sugarized liquid emerges and it mangles my taste buds … i don’t see why/HOW they even say green tea when it tastes like goddamn soda. (oh wait i know why. so they can sell their crap).

    keep? NO.

    well, i had to validate parking… 😛

    at The Coffee Bean … $1.75, eh, not bad on a windy summer night.

    taste: well, again, after waiting some 15min for the water to cool down to a comfortable temperature, i proceeded on sipping the cup. : some sort of green/oolong kinda but not grassy not oily not fishy, i think there was a kindof tiny peachy flavor?. in all, it was ok.

    $18.99/lb … v. low price

    yes i know: not white balanced, blurry.

    leaf: broken ~ 1/2 inch length, theres lots of stems.

    2.2 tsp + 2 cup water @ 190F ~ 3-4min –> BETTER, flavor ~3.5/7, some toasty-fried oily green. 2/3 as strong as the Oi Ocha .ito en, but its better than my previous infusions.

    keep? maybe.

    ~~~~ previous ~~~~~
    brew: ~180F (was 194 into cold ceramic cup, stood 2min) ~4-5min ~1-1.5tsp? … admire the exact expert technique
    smell: faint green, … fried? …oily? (^.^)???
    taste: had some last nite, was good. today: like the smell indicates: faint green grass with a twist of fried? kinda leaves an oily aftertaste. not bad. seems foody… no taninics no bitterness…
    if do a quick infuse you get a greenish liquor, if left for longer color turns orange-ish (dont know if thats from oxidation or what).
    infused longer it does gather tanin but still no bitterness…
    i wonder how it would be iced… man is so hot these days.
    update: 2nd steep: less grass, more like broken green tree twigs (if you have that experience).
    update: cold/room temp water –> didnt come out too good… after 20min, color is faint, smell is faint, taste is faint…
    YMY tea bags .(box says manufactured in USA…ok ,the little teabags say on them ‘packaged’ in the USA)
    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
    ~1.5$/box of 16 ‘aluminium’ teabags (it was on ‘sale’ at ralphs) (–> ~24$/lb)
    in 194F water, ~ 4min,
    taste: yup, good, does indeed taste like ‘real’ green tea, although very dilute, but can still perceive some grass taste, some tiny oily flavor. (on one 6min steep of 2bags a fishy flavor came out but the astringent-tannins were more overpowering).
    CBW (cold water) ~ 20min, wow we are at the pier! strong fishy smell! wow, did not expect this from a bagged tea. flavor still lacks green.
    taste: ok… flavor 4/7, tannin 2/7, bitter 0/7.
    final: even tho powerful green flavor is lacking, overall its an ok tea. buy again: YES. (unless fresh looseleaf is available).
    ~~~ interesting thing was: it was not with the other teas… at Ralph’s… it was in the ‘asian food’ section…?! and there were only 2-3 boxes of green and 2-3 boxes of genmaicha…

    argh
    it was at The Coffee Bean where, like Starbucks, every drink is properly burned like hell, burnt coal tasting 1000 calories coffee but…

    …i was really thirsty, but against common sense gave them my hard earned dollars, and got a *large* sized genmaicha.

    could the water be anymore HOT????? what kind of industrial megawatt nukers do they friggin use???

    anyway… yes ofcourse the damn rice was friggin burned, the tea tasted like toasted corn water.
    dont like the crap. keep? NO.

    the liquor color is actually green-phosphorescent! bright!

    dry leaf has lots of big ass stems = “quality is low”

    cold water, 20 min, the green liquor slowly appeared, very nice in color.
    taste: grass-like, reminds of wheatgrass shots but those are more like eating raw grass. yes bitterness is low, but after >30 minutes it gets more bitter.

    a second infusion in cold water took 45 minutes and just half amount of liquor difused into the water.

    do not add sugar! 🙂 took away the taste!

    keep? Yeah i drank it.

    technically i guess this is ‘genmaicha’ (japanese green + rice), dont know if this is japanese green tea.

    Method: In cold water, 20minutes,

    Taste: tea is very nice in flavor, tastes like the toasty barley tea with a bit more something (probably because…. its rice and tea… not barley)/ i barely detected any green tea flavor…

    keep? NO. –> pick Genmaicha from Yamamotoyama.

    looseleaf

    Steeped it in hot water….
    First the scent tingles your senses, very flowery and yet can still find the jasmine…after waking up from the olfactory hallucination, i thoroughly enjoyed the flavor… flower… jasmine…mmmmmm…. soothing….
    Excellent.

    Update: same great taste in cold water, but needs longer steep ofcourse. v.good. refreshing.

    i dont like jasmine tea with food, its too perfumey.

    Yes. keep some, but not for regular use due to perfume.
